Kings Langley splits down the middle at the River Gade. West of the river you are in Dacorum, east of it you are in Three Rivers, and that is not a technicality anyone can afford to ignore, because bin collections and permit rules genuinely differ from one street to the next. Then there is the water. Affinity Water draws this supply from the Chilterns chalk aquifer, which puts WD4 in one of the hardest bands in the country. Kettle elements fur inside a month. Shower screens cloud over and taps grow a collar, and a general wipe over leaves all of it exactly where it was.
The last thing that shapes the diary is the station. It is 21 miles from Euston and half the village is on that line, so mid-morning weekday appointments are the slots nobody wants and Saturdays fill first. We work the same round across the valley, which means Abbots Langley over the Gade, Hunton Bridge along the towpath and Apsley at the bottom of Hemel get the same prices and usually the same two people.
